TOKYO, Japan - Media representatives surround an unmarked police car outside Yoyogi police station in Tokyo on Jan. 5 that carried Yuki Muto, 21, who allegedly murdered his 20-year-old sister and dismembered her body, to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office. Muto is suspected of choking his sister, beating her with a blunt object and drowning her before severing her body with a knife and saw. A student at a cramming school for dental college, Muto is the second son of dentist parents. (Kyodo)

Suspicious fire cuts power to 6,400 Tokyo households

TOKYO, Japan - Firefighters congregate at a Tokyo Electric Power Co. substation in Tokyo's Ota Ward, where they extinguished a fire that broke out on the night of Dec. 29. The fire caused no injuries, but cut electricity to 6,400 households. Police are investigating a message posted on an Internet site earlier this week that said, ''A major blackout should be caused on Jan. 1, 2000 by severing the cable to prevent the Expo (the planned world exposition in Aichi Prefecture in 2005) and (construction of) Chubu international airport.'' The fire started around a communication cable at the substation.

LTCB executives apologizes

Tsuneo Suzuki (C), president of the Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan (LTCB), flanked by other bank executives, offers an apology to shareholders and clients in Tokyo on Oct. 23 for any inconveniences the bank's decision to come under state control has brought. The LTCB, one of three Japanese long-term credit banks, is the first bank to be nationalized under a law enacted earlier this month to avoid the possibility of its severing credit lines to its corporate borrowers and defaulting on its obligations to creditors.
