A sudden thermal gust hit the beaches of Motril, Salobreña, and Torrenueva in Granada on Sunday evening, August 17, causing umbrellas, inflatables, and paddleboards to fly and prompting authorities to evacuate the sand and advise residents to stay indoors. The Civil Guard rescued three bathers, and two more were assisted by a rescue boat. The phenomenon coincided with a rapid temperature rise to 40.1°C and wind gusts up to 86.8 km/h, which also produced a small waterspout over Torrenueva.

ABOARD THE SHIRASE, Antarctica - Members of Japan's 44th Antarctica expedition team enjoy an open-air bath aboard the icebreaker Shirase docked near Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica on Jan. 1.
