Decor on famous gate at Kyoto temple has antiseismic structure

KYOTO, Japan - Decorative muntins adorning the transom of an old gate at Higashi Honganji, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, western Japan, are found in a recent survey by experts to be not just for decoration but for earthquake resistance. The Goeidomon Gate, as photographed on Feb. 19, 2014, is one of the three most famous gates in the ancient Japanese capital.

A meal at an inn

A meal at an inn

Although the name and location of the inn is unclear, the transom in the room, the lamp, and the screen suggest that this is a dinner scene at a high-class inn. It is interesting to see the guest and the server, the food served, the sake, the tea set, and the cigarette tray.==Date:1904, Place:Hiroshima, Photo:Underwood, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number97‐10‐0]

The General's tomb,Zojoji Temple,Shiba

This is the entrance gate located in the centre area, just beyond Chokugaku Gate of Yushoin Mausoleum. Like Bunshoin, there are corridors on both sides of the gate. The only difference between the two mausoleums is the decoration of the hanasama (transom) along the corridors.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:F. Taking a bath

Two women are bathing in a luxurious bathroom. There is a marble water pail in the left corner, pictures displayed behind the glass, and artwork on the transom windows. The ceiling is splendidly done. This could be a spa town such as Hakone or Atami.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number47‐45‐0]

The Karamon Gate,Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

The Kara Gate stands in front after going through the Yomei Gate of Toshogu. Although it looks simple with only white and black colours used, it has statues of Chinese sages carved in the transom and other intricate carvings of dragons going upstream and downstream on the pillars of the gate. It is magnificent with its gold inlay on the see-through walls, which have copper pheasants carved in the upper tier and waterfowl in the lower tier.==Date:unknown, Place:Nikko, Photo:Ogawa Kazumasa, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number8‐44‐0]
