Volcanic Alert Raised for Mt. Zao in Northeastern Japan

Miyagi and Yamagata, Japan -Jan. 30: Japan's weather agency raised Tuesday the alert level for Mt. Zao, a volcano near a popular ski area in northeastern Japan, citing the detection of volcanic tremors and warning of the possibility of a small eruption. The alert on a scale of five has been raised from 1, which only indicates the "potential" for increased activity, to 2, a level advising People to refrain from approaching the crater, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency warned that an area within an approximately 1.2-kilometer radius of the crater could see rocks raining down from above if a small eruption occurs. Mt. Zao straddles the border between prefectures of Miyagi and Yamagata. According to the weather agency, volcanic tremors, caused by movements of hot subterranean water and volcanic gas, were observed over a period of 31 minutes from 2:18 p.m. on Tuesday and were larger than those recorded on Sunday and early Tuesday morning.
