Doctored 500 won coins found

The photo shows doctored South Korean 500-won coins police confiscated from a man arrested in Hiroshima on Jan. 27. Lim Seng Chua, who identified himself as Malaysian, was found possessing some 670 such coins. The coins were filed down with drill holes to match the weight of Japanese 500 yen coins. A 500 won coin is the same in size as a 500 yen coin but is less than one-tenth in value of its Japanese counterpart. ==Kyodo

    TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a sample of the new 500 yen coin unveiled July 28 by the Bank of Japan. The coin has been designed to end vending-machine fraud. It is almost the same in size, weight and design as the current 500 yen silver-colored coin, but has a slightly yellowish hue. Zinc has been added to change their electrical conductivity and to prevent vending machines from accepting other coins of similar weight and size.

      OSAKA, Japan - Photo shows a 1 kyat Myanmarese coin (R), similar in size and weight as a 500 yen Japanese coin (L). Police said June 22 they have caught two Myanmarese sailors for using the kyat coins to buy cigarettes and collect change from a vending machine in Osaka. The Myanmarese coin has a value of about 1 yen.

        TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows Hungarian forint coins recovered from vending machines in the Tokyo area. Police arrested two men Nov. 18 on suspicion of stealing 3,000 yen by placing these coins in a vending machine and operating the return-coin lever. The Hungarian coins worth about 22 yen each have been altered to make them the same size and weight as 500 yen coins.
