Crew safe after ditching balloon in round-the-world try

British pilots Andy Elson and Colin Prescot of a British hot-air balloon are rescued March 7 in the Pacific Ocean by a Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) helicopter after abandoning their attempt to make the first nonstop circumnavigation of the world. The two were picked up unhurt shortly after the balloon landed some 80 kilometers south of Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan. The photo shows the balloon drifting at the mercy of the wind after landing in the sea in a bad weather.

ASDF to supply drinking water to eruption-hit Tonga

Preparation is under way at the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force's Komaki base in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, on Jan. 20, 2022, to airlift drinking water to Australia for supply to Tonga. An undersea volcanic eruption in mid-January triggered a tsunami that caused severe damage to the South Pacific island nation. The Self-Defense Forces airplanes carrying potable water left Komaki Air Base in Aichi Prefecture on the night of the day.

March held in Shizuoka to mark 1954 Bikini Atoll H-bomb test

SHIZUOKA, Japan - About 1,000 people march in Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture on March 1, calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons in commemoration of the 54th anniversary of the irradiation of the crew of a Yaizu-based Japanese fishing ship by a U.S. hydrogen bomb test at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. ASDF begins work to salvage C-1 transport plane

HIROSHIMA, Japan - The 499-ton salvage ship Shinyo Maru (foreground) begins work July 8 to recover an Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) transport plane that crashed in the Sea of Japan off Okinoshima Island, Shimane Prefecture, on June 28. In the background is a destroyer. The C-1 transport plane with a crew of five disappeared from radar after taking off from the ASDF Miho base in Tottori Prefecture for a 90-minute test flight. The body of one crew member was found July 4.

ASDF training jet crashes, pilot killed

SENDAI, Japan - Rescuers search the wreckage of an Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) T-2 training jet that crashed in a forested area in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on March 22. The pilot, identified as Second Lt. Keita Yogo, 25, was found dead.

Police probe ASDF jet crash in Saitama

SAYAMA, Japan - Police investigators on Nov. 23 surround the wreckage of an Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) T-33 training jet that crashed the day before by the riverbank in Sayama, Saitama Prefecture, just 3.6 kilometers north of the ASDF Iruma base. The crash severed power lines, blacking out some 800,000 households in Tokyo and Saitama.
