Honda unveils 'hybrid' car technology

TOKYO, Japan - A handout photo shows a new fuel-efficient power source for a 'hybrid' car unveiled July 6 by Honda Motor Co. Called Honda Integrated Motor Assist System, it is a compact 1-liter lean burn VTEC gasoline engine combined with an electric motor. Honda claimed that using the new technologies it has achieved the world's lowest fuel consumption for a mass-produced gasoline-powered vehicle -- 35 kilometers per liter (22 miles per gallon).

M'bishi Motors to launch 100% ethanol car in Brazil

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said on June 21 it will roll out the Pajero TR4 Flex, its first vehicle to run completely on ethanol, in Brazil in July, in an effort to establish a stronger presence in the fast-growing alternative fuel car market. The four-wheel-drive vehicle powered by a 2-liter 16-valve engine can run on any mixture of gasoline and ethanol, the Japanese automaker said. (Kyodo)

Toyota releases all-new, higher-end minivan hybrid

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. on June 12 marketed in Japan a completely redesigned, higher-end minivan hybrid (in photo), whose mileage has improved to 20 kilometers per liter of gasoline, a fuel economy comparable to that of a compact car, thanks to use of a smaller motor and battery. The seven-seater, four-wheel-drive Estima G with a 2.4-liter engine also boasts better acceleration and sells for 4.41 million yen, about 500,000 yen more expensive than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles, Toyota Motor said. Toyota to present advanced eco-friendly vehicle at Tokyo Motor S

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said Oct. 11 it will unveil the Fine-X (in handout photo), a new concept model for environmentally friendly fuel-cell hybrid vehicles that emit only water, at the Tokyo Motor Show beginning on Oct. 22. The vehicle employs Toyota's fuel-cell hybrid system that requires chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen as fuel to generate electricity. It also features unusually smooth drive thanks to ''four-wheel independent drive control and large, steering angle mechanism,'' the carmaker said. (Kyodo)

Honda devises fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine for Civic

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said July 5 it has developed a new 1.8-liter engine (in photo) which is one of the most fuel-efficient engines of its class in the world. The 1.8/i-VTEC engine will be mounted in the new Civic passenger car model Honda will put on the market this fall. The engine is based on Honda's intelligent VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during ignition and acceleration to achieve a powerful torque, and then delays intake valve closure during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy, the automaker said. Honda's new NSX model to be highest-priced Japanese car

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said on May 23 it will add a new model to its NSX series of sports cars at a price of 11.95 million yen, the highest for a car made in Japan. The NSX-R will go on sale in Japan on May 24 with an annual sales target of 60 units. The two-seater NSX-R, a new version of the NSX-R sold between 1992 and 1994, is equipped with a 3.2-liter engine and a six-speed manual transmission.

Mazda succeeds in test run of fuel cell car

TOKYO, Japan - A prototype fuel cell vehicle developed by Mazda Motor Corp. runs during an open test drive at the company's research center in Yokohama on June 12. The five-seat vehicle, based on the Premacy small passenger car and powered by a methanol reformer fuel cell system, ran at a speed of around 30 kilometers per hour. The fuel cell system was developed jointly by Mazda and U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co.

Honda begins road tests of fuel cell-powered vehicle

TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said Feb. 13 it began public road testing of a new vehicle (seen in photo) equipped with an originally developed fuel cell in California as part of a project to eventually introduce and market fuel cell vehicles.

Nissan to release hybrid car

TOKYO, Japan - A handout photo shows a hybrid car combining a 1,800-cc gasoline engine with an electric traction motor which Nissan Motor Co. will release in April. Nissan said March 23 the Tino HYBRID achieves a twofold improvement in fuel economy and a more than 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with gasoline-engine vehicles of the same class.
