Mazda succeeds in test run of fuel cell car

TOKYO, Japan - A prototype fuel cell vehicle developed by Mazda Motor Corp. runs during an open test drive at the company's research center in Yokohama on June 12. The five-seat vehicle, based on the Premacy small passenger car and powered by a methanol reformer fuel cell system, ran at a speed of around 30 kilometers per hour. The fuel cell system was developed jointly by Mazda and U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co.

      TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said on June 21 it will roll out the Pajero TR4 Flex, its first vehicle to run completely on ethanol, in Brazil in July, in an effort to establish a stronger presence in the fast-growing alternative fuel car market.           TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said Oct. 11 it will unveil the Fine-X (in handout photo), a new concept model for environmentally friendly fuel-cell hybrid vehicles that emit only water, at the Tokyo Motor Show beginning on Oct. 22. The vehicle employs Toyota's fuel-cell hybrid system that requires chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen as fuel to generate electricity.             Honda devises fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine for Civic

            TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said July 5 it has developed a new 1.8-liter engine (in photo) which is one of the most fuel-efficient engines of its class in the world. The 1.8/i-VTEC engine will be mounted in the new Civic passenger car model Honda will put on the market this fall. The engine is based on Honda's intelligent VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during ignition and acceleration to achieve a powerful torque, and then delays intake valve closure during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy, the automaker said.                 TOKYO, Japan - A handout photo released March 21 by Honda Motor Co. shows a car equipped with an ''intelligent'' driver support system designed to reduce the strains of driving. The system is activated when a car runs at 65-100 kilometers per hour. Using laser radar, it measures the distance between the car and a vehicle in front and automatically controls the brake and throttle mechanisms to keep a certain distance. It also detects lane markings with a small camera to keep a car in lane, Honda said.

                      A manned high-speed train of Central Japan Railway Co. hits a record speed of 501 kilometers per hour Nov. 28 at a test center in Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo. The new record velocity of superconducting magnetically levitated linear motor vehicle, or Maglev as it is popularly called, reached the milestone on an 18.4-km track built between Tsuru and Otsuki.
