'Domino' transplant involving 4 people begins

KYOTO, Japan - A team of doctors led by Prof. Koichi Tanaka at Kyoto University Hospital commences a sequence of liver transplant operations involving four people July 9. The operations are aimed at saving the lives of three patients using a liver portion donated by a healthy man. The operations, the first such surgery in Japan and known as a ''domino'' transplant, will continue until the morning of July 10. The photo was provided by the hospital.

          KUMAMOTO, Japan - Doctors and nurses treating patients at the Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto Hospital in Kumamoto Prefecture as they were sickened after inhaling toxic fumes that had filled the hospital's emergency care unit after a 34-year-old man who attempted to kill himself by swallowing a liquid pesticide was taken to the room. The man later died at the hospital. Of the 54 people who had been treated, 23 were patients who were in the emergency care unit and 31 were hospital staffers, the hospital said.
