Public security panel OKs AUM surveillance
TOKYO, Japan - Kozo Fujita, head of the Public Security Examination Commission, meets the press in Tokyo on Jan. 31 after the independent panel formally decided to allow security authorities to put the AUM Shinrikyo cult under surveillance for up to three years. Cult founder Shoko Asahara, whose real name is Chizuo Matsumoto, is on trial in 17 criminal cases, including the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system. The cult said earlier this month it had changed its name to ''Aleph.''
