Microsoft's new video game console

TOKYO, Japan - The photo shows a new video game sole to be sold by software giant Microsoft Corp. from the fall of 2001. Tentatively called the X-Box, the console will feature a DVD drive and be capable of accessing the Internet. It will compete head to head with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation2 -- the game platform recently launched with great fanfare in Japan.

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said Oct. 11 it will unveil the Fine-X (in handout photo), a new concept model for environmentally friendly fuel-cell hybrid vehicles that emit only water, at the Tokyo Motor Show beginning on Oct. 22. The vehicle employs Toyota's fuel-cell hybrid system that requires chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen as fuel to generate electricity. It also features unusually smooth drive thanks to ''four-wheel independent drive control and large, steering angle mechanism,'' the carmaker said. (Kyodo)

Sony to sell futuristic version of AIBO robot pet

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc., the sales unit of Sony Corp., said Nov. 8 it will introduce on Nov. 23 a futuristic version of the AIBO dog-like robot pet - the AIBO Entertainment Robot ERS-220. The new AIBO model has 19 LEDs and multiple enhanced touch sensors from head to tail for better emotional expression. It will be priced at 180,000 yen.

Bill Gates addresses the opening of Game Show

MAKUHARI, Japan - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates delivers a keynote address at the opening of the 2001 Spring Game Show in Makuhari Messe, east of Tokyo, on March 30. Gates said he is committed to making the new Xbox video game system a success in Japan when it is launched in the fall.

Video game maker Sega's president Okawa dies

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows Isao Okawa, president of major video game console and software maker Sega Corp., who died on March 16 of heart failure at a Tokyo hospital at the age of 74. In 1984, Okawa assumed the chairmanship of Sega Enterprises Inc., the predecessor of Sega, which is known globally for its Dreamcast video game consoles.

Sony unveils PDA

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a personal digital assistant (PDA), a palm-held computer, unveiled July 13 by Sony Corp. The company said the device using an OS developed by Palm Inc. of the U.S. will be released in September. Measuring 11.5 by 7.1 by 1.5 centimeters and weighing 120 grams, it features a ''jog dial'' that allows users to scroll and open applications. Sony will offer two models -- one with a color screen and the other with a black-and-white screen -- and expects them to retail for 60,000 yen and 55,000 yen, respectively.
