Hundreds of companies hold shareholders meetings

TOKYO, Japan - A shareholder (L) in Asahi Bank attends a shareholders meeting in Tokyo's Otemachi district on June 28. The bank was among about 200 companies in Japan that held their shareholders meetings that day. More meetings were to take place the following day. Asahi Bank recently announced it has canceled its planned integration with Sanwa and Tokai banks.

Sakaguchi supports changes for overseas A-bomb victims

Three new megabank groups -- Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., formed by the merger of Sumitomo Bank and Sakura Bank, Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group Inc., a merged body of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Trust & Banking Co. and Nippon Trust Bank, as well as UFJ Holdings Inc. -- began operations the same day.

Mitsubishi-Tokyo is one of three megabank groups which began operations the same day.

3 UFJ banks to post losses

TOKYO, Japan - Executives of three Japanese banks to merge as UFJ Holdings Inc. in April announced at a news conference March 16 they will post losses in their March settlements to write off over 1 trillion yen in bad loans. Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust & Banking Co. are the first major banks in Japan to formally announce losses in March book-closings for fiscal 2000.

Ex-head of Shinwa bank gets 4-yr jail sentence for loans

TOKYO, Japan - A file photo shows former President Toru Tsujita of Shinwa Bank in Nagasaki Prefecture, who was sentenced by the Tokyo District Court on Feb. 7 to four years in prison for misusing 6.5 billion yen in bank funds. Tsujita, 74, was charged with conspiring to loan money to a Tokyo cosmetic company run by Yoshimasa Soejima, as well as two other companies from July 1993 to June 1995 with the foreknowledge that the money was not likely to be recovered. Soejima, 56, was also sentenced to three years and eight months in prison.

BOJ starts real-time settlement system

TOKYO, Japan - Female employees of Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank handle settlement data on computers in the bank's head office in Tokyo's Uchisaiwaicho district Jan. 4. The Bank of Japan launched the Real-Time Gross-Settlement system the same day to track the debts banks owe each other.

FRC gives preliminary approval to UFJ launch

Sanwa, Tokai, Toyo banks to form UFJ Holdings

TOKYO, Japan - Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust & Banking Co. have announced they will set up a joint holding company called ''UFJ Holdings Inc.'' in April 2001. Shaking hands at a news conference Oct. 4 are (from L to R) Tokai Bank President Hideo Ogasawara, Sanwa Bank President Kaneo Muromachi and Toyo Trust & Banking President Shunroku Yokosuka. UFJ, which stands for United Financial of Japan, will be based in Osaka, and the three banks will integrate their operations under the new holding company.

Fireworks show welcomes G-8 foreign ministers meeting

MIYAZAKI, Japan - A display of fireworks in the Matsuyama district of Miyazaki on July 11 takes place on the eve of the start of a meeting of foreign ministers of Group of Eight (G-8) countries. The two-day meeting gets under way in the city the next day, to be followed by a G-8 summit in Okinawa Prefecture on July 21-23.

Toyo Trust to join Sanwa-Tokai alliance
