Nippon Steel, POSCO launch strategic business tie-up

Sumitomo Metal, Mitsubishi Materials tie up in joint venture

Mitsubishi-Tokyo is one of three megabank groups which began operations the same day.

Agricultural insurance federation to tie up with Kyoei

TOKYO, Japan - Wataru Ozawa (L), president of Kyoei Mutual Fire & Marine Insurance Co., and Shoichi Arai, chairman of the National Mutual Insurance Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives, shake hands at a press conference in Tokyo on Feb. 17. Former Nippon Steel Chairman Saito dies

TOKYO, Japan - Hiroshi Saito, shown in this file photo taken in October 1995, former chairman of Nippon Steel Corp., died of a respiratory disorder at a Tokyo hospital on Oct. 6. He was 80. Saito became the company president in 1987 and served as chairman between 1993 and 1998, during which time he also worked as vice chairman of the Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren), a leading business lobby.

NCB begins operations under new owners

TOKYO, Japan - Nippon Credit Bank (NCB) opens Sept. 4 for its first official day of business under the ownership of a consortium led by Internet investor Softbank Corp., following 21 months of state control that ended Sept. 1. The new management is expected to adopt a plan to rename the institution Aozora Bank in January 2001. Aozora means ''blue sky'' in Japanese. TOKYO, Japan - Business leaders from Japan and the United States begin full-fledged discussions on the information, manufacturing and service industries July 10 at a hotel in Tokyo. The three-day ''37th Japan-U.S. Business Conference'' began Sunday. Among the issues under discussion are the lowering of interconnection fees charged by telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., a dispute over dumping charges made by U.S. steelmakers against Japanese steel manufacturers and the early creation of an environment in Japan suitable for an information technology network.
