Calf born using sperm of cloned bull

KAGOSHIMA, Japan - Photo taken Oct. 4 by the Cattle Breeding Institute in Osumi, Kagoshima Prefecture, shows a calf born from a surrogate mother impregnated through artificial insemination with the sperm of a bull cloned from somatic cells. Researchers at the institute said the birth, a first for Japan and probably the world, proves that cloned bulls are capable of breeding and is a step toward using cloning technology in stock breeding.

'2nd-generation' cloned bull born in Kagoshima

KAGOSHIMA, Japan - The photo shows a calf born on Jan. 23 as a result of cloning a cloned bull by Japanese researchers, the world's first ''second-generation'' clone of a large mammal. Researchers at the Kagoshima Prefectural Cattle Breeding Development Institute in the town of Osumi said Jan. 24 they had extracted skin cells from a bull originally cloned from a 16-year-old bull 23 days after it was born in March last year.

World's largest quake simulator opened to public

What is claimed to be the world's largest earthquake simulator -- capable of artificially generating tremors of intensity levels greater than the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake -- is opened to the public Oct. 8. The simulator was unveiled at a shipyard in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, operated by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. The company built the machine at the request of the Science and Technology Agency's National Research Institute for Disaster Prevention.

Calf cloned from adult somatic

A calf produced by cloning somatic cells taken from an adult cow with unfertilized eggs in Ishikawa Prefecture dies Aug. 1, four days after its birth. The calf was born in the world's second case using the technology at the Ishikawa Prefectural Livestock Research Center, following the birth of twin calves with the same technique at the center July 5. The calf's death follows a series of deaths of cloned calves.
