Japan registers DNA for whales caught in 'research whaling'
CHIBA, Japan, - A researcher checks the skin of a whale caught under Japan's ''research whaling'' in northwest Pacific. Japan's Fisheries Agency is proceeding with plans to register the DNA of whales in an effort to crack down on poaching and illegal marketing of whale meat. What the agency is aiming for with its DNA registry program is to track down the source of whale meat marketed in Japan, by extracting DNA from the skin of whales onboard whaling ships soon after they are caught. Photo was provided by the Institute of Cetacean Research.
