Digital TV broadcasting to begin in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - With digital broadcasting via broadcasting satellite (BS) to commence in Japan at 11 p.m. Dec. 1, one of stores in Tokyo's Shinjuku district is busy Nov. 29 promoting tuners to receive digital programs or TV sets with built-in tuners. Ten channels will offer high-definition BS digital broadcasting programs -- three by public broadcaster Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK), five free commercial channels and two pay channels.

NHK, Fuji TV to launch coordinated programs in March

Solar-powered Xmas tree with LED illumination goes on display

TOKYO, Japan - A 15-meter-high solar-powered Christmas tree with some 20,000 light emitting diode, or LED, lights is unveiled for the season at the Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district on Nov. 1. The tree will remain on display until Dec. 25. (Kyodo)

Fukuchi becomes new NHK head

TOKYO, Japan - Former Asahi Breweries Ltd. adviser Shigeo Fukuchi (file photo) became president of public broadcaster NHK on Jan. 25. Fukuchi is the first head of NHK, officially called Japan Broadcasting Corp., hailing from the outside in about 20 years. He succeeded Genichi Hashimoto, who stepped down Jan. 24 to take responsibility for the insider stock trading scandal, for a three-year term.

High court orders NHK redress over sex-slave 'trial' program

TOKYO, Japan - Plaintiffs rejoice in front of the Tokyo High Court on Jan. 29 after the court ordered Japan Broadcasting Corp. and two TV production companies to pay 2 million yen in compensation to a women's rights group over a 2001 television program on Japan's wartime sex slavery. (Kyodo)

NEC to launch PCs for digital satellite TV broadcasts

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows what NEC Corp. says is Japan's first desktop personal computer capable of receiving digital satellite television broadcasts. NEC said Feb. 27 it will start shipping the VALUESTAR T on March 8. The model has a 15.3-inch wide digital liquid crystal display (LCD) that can automatically show selected TV programs. The model is equipped with Intel's Pentium III CPU and a 60-gigabyte hard disk drive.

Comedian Samma, actress Matsushima top celebrity poll

TOKYO, Japan - Actor and comedian Akashiya Samma (L) and actress Nanako Matsushima (R) topped the list of Japan's favorite personalities in 2000, according to a survey released Jan. 10 by the NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute. Samma, who is also a television host, topped the list for the third straight year and a ninth time altogether, while it was a first for Matsushima, who has drawn top ratings in her TV dramas.
