Wheelchair-bound Japanese woman to cross Australia desert

OITA, Japan - A 28-year-old disabled Japanese woman will attempt to cross Australia's Simpson Desert in a specially designed solar car in September to publicize environmental protection and social inclusion of disabled people. Erina Kawakami (2nd from right) from Hiji, Oita Prefecture, southwestern Japan, plans to travel about 350 kilometers across the central Australian desert in six days.
