Japanese researchers develop low-noise wind power system

TOKYO, Japan - A new low-noise wind power system that can adapt to changes in wind direction and continue rotating is set to hit the market in Japan for public use. Kazuichi Seki, professor of a Tokai University science and technology research center and a member of a team that developed the system, said similar research on the development of such windmill-shaped generators has been done abroad but that this is the first time such a system has been put to practical use.       The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Aisin Seiki, and Ibaraki University announced on April 21 that they have developed a thermoelectric power generation module, which is composed of an alloy of easily available elements such as iron, aluminum, and silicon, and converts temperature differences into electricity. The company has developed a prototype communication device that incorporates the module, and confirmed that it can generate electricity and communicate with a temperature difference of 5 degrees Celsius. The temperature and humidity information was transmitted via Bluetooth, a short-range wireless communication standard, and was successfully displayed in real time on a tablet terminal screen.         Demonstration experiment using Osaka City University's fuel-cell vehicles to operate ships on hydrogen

        Shigeyuki Minami, a special-appointment professor at the Organization for Advanced Research and Development, Osaka City University, and his colleagues on April 1 unveiled a demonstration experiment of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered ship (photo) that can drive a fuel cell vehicle as a hydrogen power generation system. It was jointly developed with Current Dynamics (Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City). It will be equipped with Toyota Motor Corporation's "MIRAI" fuel cell vehicle and can carry up to 50 cubic meters of hydrogen. It has already obtained an operation license from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It can travel for about 13 hours at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour, and about 93 hours at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour.             TOKYO, Japan - A University of Tokyo research team led by Ken Kiyono said on Feb. 15 it has discovered a special pattern of stock index fluctuations before and after a market crash, a finding that could pave the way for detecting downside risks for the stock market. The team has analyzed minute fluctuations of the U.S. Standard & Poor's 500 index between 1984 and 1995 and found the special pattern, called critical regime, emerging in the September-December quarter of 1987 that included the Oct. 19 Black Monday crash.
