Season's first crop of 'Yubari' melon fetches 150,000 yen
SAPPORO, Japan - These ''Yubari'' melons, the season's first crop grown at a Hokkaido farm, were knocked down to a Sapporo department store for 150,000 yen (about 1,170 dollars at current exchange rate) apiece in an auction held May 14. ''The price makes me lose all my appetite,'' commented a housewife who visited the fruit section of the department store.
