    Commendation Ceremony for Koichi Mizushima of Toshiba

    On April 19, Toshiba awarded a special prize to Koichi Mizushima, 78, executive fellow of Toshiba Corporation, for his contribution to the development of lithium-ion batteries.       Ice making system developed by Professor Uemura of Nagaoka University of Technology

      Professor Yasushi Uemura of Nagaoka University of Technology has developed a practical system for artificially making ice by radiative cooling. By preventing the flow path of the refrigerant from contacting the surface of the water to be frozen, the system generates a state of radiative cooling that causes the water to freeze gradually from the top. Like natural ice, the ice crystals are directed in a single direction, and the crystals are large. In cooperation with Sakata Corporation (Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture), the company aims to release the ice for commercial use next spring. They plan to sell ice on their own in the spring of next year with the aim of promoting the water quality of Niigata Prefecture and revitalizing the region. Professor Uemura is considering launching the ice making system itself in 2020, and is also seeking partner companies.             Electric Mobility Poimo Jointly Developed by Mercari and the University of Tokyo

            Mercalli, Professor Yoshihiro Kawahara of the University of Tokyo and others have jointly developed "poimo," a personal mobility device for short-distance use. It can be inflated with a commercially available air container and used in the shape of a wooden horse. It can be folded and carried around like a beach ball. With its compactness, softness and safety due to the fact that it is inflated by gas pressure, the company expects the elderly and women with children to use it, and also sees potential for outdoor and leisure use. The final sales price is targeted at several tens of thousands of yen, and they plan to continue running experiments in special economic zones to find a balance between cost, performance, and usability.               Double Giken's Communication Tool for ALS Patients

              Double Giken has developed a technology to identify the words a patient thinks from the blood flow in the brain and project them on a screen for ALS patients who cannot move their eyelids or fingers. The technology is based on a device that uses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to determine "yes/no" from brain activity. The patient selects one word at a time and only the vowel sound of the word to be communicated, and the number of words is used to analogize the candidate words to be communicated and show them on the screen. The system, which consists of a personal computer and a terminal, will go on sale in September at the earliest. It was developed with the support of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in collaboration with Professor Naoki Tanaka of Toyo University and others.
