Japan firms to sell idol images to S. Korean cell phone users

TOKYO, Japan - An idle screen of a mobile phone handset displays an image of Fumika Suzuki, a Japanese idol whose images Computer game maker Taito Corp. and trading house Marubei Corp. will provide for cell phone services by SK Telecom of South Korea. Starting in mid-November, Taito and Marubeni will sell images of five to six idols from 300 won (about 30 yen) to 350 won each. (Kyodo)

Commuter train in Taiwan

NAGOYA, Japan - Photo shows an image of a commuter train to be built by Taiwan Rolling Stock Co., a joint venture between Japanese rail car manufacturer Nippon Sharyo Ltd., trading house Sumitomo Corp. and their Taiwanese partners. The two Japanese firms said Jan. 13, 2011 that the joint venture has won an order for 296 commuter train cars from the Taiwan Railways Administration. (Kyodo)

Sanyo's water-proof card-size digital TV

OSAKA, Japan - Sanyo Electric Co. says it will release a slim water-proof digital TV handset (photo) on Nov. 21 that retails for 50,000 yen in Japan. The company says the handset, which has a 4-inch screen, is designed primarily for users who want to watch TV in a bathtub and that no damage is done even if the device falls into water. (Kyodo)

NTT DoCoMo to introduce 5 new mobile handsets in June

TOKYO, Japan - NTT DoCoMo Inc. said May 17 it will launch five new handsets in June for its FOMA third-generation mobile phone services. The new 901iS series will feature electronic money services and allow users to browse document files and switch to the television-mode during a voice call. Each model is expected to sell for around 35,000 yen. (Kyodo)

NTT DoCoMo launches lightest 3G FOMA mobile handset

TOKYO, Japan - NTT DoCoMo Inc. launched nationwide sales on Feb. 4 of its new third-generation FOMA mobile phones weighing only 104 grams, the lightest among FOMA handsets, the company said. Users of the phone, P901i 3G FOMA, can customize colors and designs with the purchase of ''custom jackets'' that can be installed on the handsets. The phone sells for around 35,000 yen. (Kyodo)

Citizen Watch devises smallest PDA

TOKYO, Oct. 27 Kyodo - Photo shows what Citizen Watch Co. says is ''the world's smallest, thinnest and lightest personal digital assistant (PDA).'' The PDA is 90 by 60 millimeters with advanced e-mail functions targeting business users, Citizen Watch said. Although no bigger than a business card, the new device has a screen twice as large as a mobile phone display. The major watchmaker will release the new PDA for 20,000 to 30,000 yen early in 2004.

(1) KDDI unveils new cell phone

TOKYO, Japan - KDDI Corp. President Tadashi Onodera shows off a new cellular photo at a news conference in Tokyo on Oct. 22. KDDI said that starting Nov. 28 it will offer a new service enabling users of its ''au'' mobile phone service to transmit and receive data at a speed equivalent to that provided by an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) connection. KDDI said it will introduce a flat rate for packet transmission, giving users of the new service unlimited access to the Internet for a fee of 4,200 yen a month. (Kyodo)

Sony's AIBO robots able to send images to cell phones

TOKYO, Japan - A system enabling Sony Corp.'s AIBO robot pet (L) to transmit images to mobile phones is demonstrated at the ''Wireless Japan 2003'' exhibition in Tokyo that runs through July 18.
