Work to demolish empress's old home to begin Jan. 15
TOKYO, Japan - Work to demolish the former home (file photo) of Empress Michiko, given to the state in lieu of payment of inheritance tax, is scheduled to begin Jan. 15, Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa said Jan. 14. The question of whether to pull down or preserve the building had been the center of a dispute between the Finance Ministry, which insisted on demolishing the building to sell the land, and local residents, who wanted the house preserved.
