KYOTO, Japan - A lawyer for Chinese plaintiffs come out of the Kyoto District Court on Jan. 15, with banners calling a decision by the court as ''unjust.'' The court rejected a suit filed by former Chinese laborers and bereaved family members seeking compensation from a major steelmaker and the central government for forcibly bringing them to Japan and making them work in nickel mines in Kyoto Prefecture during World War II. Nagasaki ordered to pay funeral fees for overseas A-bomb survivo

NAGASAKI, Japan - Family members of Choi Gye Chol, a South Korean atomic-bomb survivor who died at age 78 in a hospital in Busan, South Korea, last July 25, stand in front of the Nagasaki District Court on March 8 before entering the court to hear a ruling on their claim that the Nagasaki city government should pay Choi's funeral expenses. HIROSHIMA, Japan - A supporter of South Korean plaintiffs who sued the Japanese government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for 440 million yen in damages holds up a banner in front of the Hiroshima High Court on Jan. 19 showing the plaintiffs' claim was partially admitted by the court. The court ordered the state to pay 1.2 million yen in damages to each of the 40 plaintiffs, who were affected by the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima while forced to work at Mitsubishi's factory in Hiroshima as conscript laborers during World War II. YAMAGUCHI, Japan - A diary written by Mitsuo Ozaki (1902-1985), a Japanese government official sent to Afghanistan in the 1930s, has been found in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The diary suggests that the Afghan government became irritated with Japan over its espionage activities directed against the Soviet Union prior to World War II. Ozaki's son Yukinori shows the diary, which he found at his home in Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture. (Kyodo)

NIIGATA, Japan - Chinese plaintiffs, who sued the Japanese government and harbor transport company Rinko Corp. to seek compensation for their forced labor in Japan during World War II, hold up a paper telling of their court victory in front of the Niigata District Court on March 26. The court ordered the government and the Niigata-based company to pay 88 million yen in damages to the 12 plaintiffs including 10 former laborers who were forced to work at Niigata port during the war.
