Damages given over base noise

TACHIKAWA, Japan - One of plaintiffs holds a banner telling their supporters of their victory after the Hachioji branch of the Tokyo District Court ordered the government May 13 to pay around 160 million yen in compensation to 242 out of the 325 people who sued the government over aircraft noise at the U.S. forces' Yokota air base in western Tokyo. Court rejects request for ban on night flights at U.S. base

OKINAWA, Japan - Residents near the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture and their supporters protest a ruling on their noise pollution suit by the Okinawa branch of the Naha District Court in front of the branch building on Feb. 17. The court ordered the state to pay 2.8 billion yen in compensation but rejected their request to ban nightly flights at the base. (Kyodo)

HIROSHIMA, Japan - South Korean plaintiffs who sued the Japanese government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for a total of 440 million yen in damages enter the Hiroshima High Court in Hiroshima on Jan. 18. The court ordered the state to pay 1.2 million yen in damages to each of the 40 plaintiffs, who were affected by the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima while forced to work at Mitsubishi's factory in Hiroshima as conscript laborers during World War II. Court says Koizumi's shrine visit official but rejects damages

TOKYO, Japan - Toshiyuki Kawakami, head of a group of 45 plaintiffs who sued the central and Kumamoto prefectural governments to seek compensation for the Minamata mercury-poisoning disease, holds a banner proclaiming their victory in front of the Supreme Court in Tokyo on Oct. 25. TOKYO, Japan - Plaintiffs, who sued the government and Nittetsu Mining Co. seeking compensation for former coal miners who contracted pneumoconiosis, bow to their supporters in appreciation at the Supreme Court in Tokyo on April 27. The court finalized a lower court ruling ordering the government and Nittetsu Mining to pay a total of 560 million yen in damages to 200 plaintiffs for former coal miners' sufferings, putting an end to the 19-year lawsuit. NIIGATA, Japan - Chinese plaintiffs, who sued the Japanese government and harbor transport company Rinko Corp. to seek compensation for their forced labor in Japan during World War II, hold up a paper telling of their court victory in front of the Niigata District Court on March 26. The court ordered the government and the Niigata-based company to pay 88 million yen in damages to the 12 plaintiffs including 10 former laborers who were forced to work at Niigata port during the war.
