(1)Court orders damages for A-bomb-affected Korean workers

HIROSHIMA, Japan - South Korean plaintiffs who sued the Japanese government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for a total of 440 million yen in damages enter the Hiroshima High Court in Hiroshima on Jan. 18. The court ordered the state to pay 1.2 million yen in damages to each of the 40 plaintiffs, who were affected by the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima while forced to work at Mitsubishi's factory in Hiroshima as conscript laborers during World War II.               Okada Shell Manufacturing (Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture) will introducean IT production management system to its No. 2 plant by December 2020. The investment will amount to about 20 million yen. The plant is the main production base near the main plant. The production plan will be reflected directly from the office to the production facilities in the plant, and the progress will be monitored in real time. Okada Shell Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is engaged in the production of cores, which are sand molds used to create cavities inside castings. Conventional paper-based production records have been prone to errors, but the company will automatically accumulate production data from its facilities and use the data to extract production conditions that realize high quality and to train young workers.                 FUJIFILM Holdings (HD) announced on November 5 that it will make Fuji Xerox its wholly owned subsidiary in early November. The company will acquire 25% of Fuji Xerox's shares and its stake in its U.S. affiliates, and pay a total of $2.3 billion (about 253 billion yen) to Xerox. When Xerox fell into financial difficulties, Fujifilm HD announced in 2006 that it would acquire shares in Xerox and aim for a management integration between Xerox and Fuji Xerox. However, shareholders opposed to the acquisition of Xerox filed a lawsuit to stop the acquisition, and a U.S. court ruled to temporarily halt the acquisition, and the newly-elected management team of Xerox announced the cancellation of the acquisition agreement at the shareholders' meeting. As a result of Xerox's cancellation of the agreement, Fujifilm HD had filed a claim for damages, but has now given up on the acquisition of Xerox.                   Hamabe Seisakusho has installed a punch/fiber laser multifunction machine at its main factory, which will be operational within the month. The investment will amount to 200 million yen. The combined punch and fiber laser machine will be operated unmanned 24 hours a day, including die changes, to improve processing efficiency and save manpower. The machine is also equipped with a material feeder and product accumulator, which automatically feeds six types of materials at the right time to handle small-lot, high-mix sheet metal processing. With the introduction of a punch/fiber laser multifunction machine, the company aims to increase productivity in sheet metal processing, improve its ability to respond to single-part orders and short delivery times, and also acquire new orders.                     Nagatsu Seisakusho will begin automating its main plant to improve the efficiencyof machining die parts. The company will introduce work changers for 5-axis machining centers (MC) and other equipment to replace processed parts. The company plans to introduce several 5-axis MCs and work changers as a set if they are utilized smoothly. The installation cost is about 10 million yen. Workers without machining skills only need to take the workpiece and electrodes in and out of the shelves at the site. The company's domestic sales are about 1.6 billion yen. However, the domestic mold market is shrinking. Rather than expanding sales, this automation initiative is aimed at strengthening cost competitiveness and promoting work style reform. Once the automation at the head office plant gets going, the company plans to start automation at the Niigata plant in Mitsuke City, Niigata Prefecture in two to three years.
