Federal Express deploys fuel-cell car for deliveries

TOKYO, Japan - Powered by a fuel cell, the HydroGen3 leaves the Ariake cargo center of U.S. courier Federal Express in Tokyo on July 9 carrying deliveries. Federal Express became the world's first company to use a fuel-cell vehicle commercially by deploying the pollution-free car. (Kyodo)

      The construction cost was not disclosed, but it is estimated to be several percent higher than the usual cost of about 600 million yen. The station will produce hydrogen using city gas from a medium-pressure pipeline. Carbon dioxide (CO2) generated in the process of mining and burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) is offset. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to have more than 100 fuel cell buses in use by the end of this year, and the Toyosu Hydrogen Station will be responsible for supplying hydrogen to the city's fuel cell buses. Takashi Anamizu, vice president of Tokyo Gas, said on the same day that he expects the station's operation rate to increase significantly.             Fukuoka City, Tokyo R&D (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), and others have begun a joint demonstration of fuel cell trucks (photo). By increasing the size of the high-pressure hydrogen container, they will be able to extend the cruising range from the 2018 demonstration to 210 kilometers and run on expressways. The vehicle will be a modified diesel-powered two-ton truck, which was used for 55 days from October to December in 2006 to make deliveries in the central part of Fukuoka City, traveling about 30 kilometers a day. The hydrogen containers were increased from three 36-liter bottles to three 51-liter bottles, and the cruising range was increased from 150 kilometers to 210 kilometers. The demonstration is being carried out as part of the Ministry of the Environment's "Technology Development and Demonstration Project to Strengthen CO2 Emission Reduction Measures.               Toyota Motor Corporation's Special Mobility for the Tokyo Olympics

              On April 18, Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled to the press the APM (Accessible People Mover), an electric vehicle (EV) specially designed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The APM will be used to transport the elderly, parents with infants, wheelchair users, spectators and athletes around the venue. The APM is an open-type vehicle with doors removed on both sides and can accommodate up to six people, including the driver. It is designed to be easy to get in and out of and easy for volunteers to drive. A ramp is stored under the floor, and the center seat can be folded to allow wheelchair access. The vehicle measures 3.9 meters in length, 1.6 meters in width, and 2 meters in height, has a maximum speed of 19 kilometers per hour, and can travel 100 kilometers on a single charge.
