Sharp boosts 1st-half group net profit

OSAKA, Japan - Sharp Corp. President Katsuhiko Machida announces in Osaka on Oct. 29 that the company's group net profit in the fiscal first half jumped 22.1% to a new high of 27.95 billion yen due to good sales of liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs, camera-equipped mobile phones, LCD monitors and flash memory chips.                       On the 1st, Shionogi announced a new mid-term management plan to invest 500 billion yen in expanding overseas business and launching new businesses by FY2024. The company will also increase research and development expenses by 20% over the past five years to about 342.1 billion yen.
