Supreme Court holds state responsible for Minamata disease

TOKYO, Japan - Environment Minister Yuriko Koike bows to plaintiffs who sued the central and Kumamoto prefectural governments to seek compensation for Minamata mercury-poisoning disease at the Environment Ministry in Tokyo on Oct. 15 after the Supreme Court held the governments responsible for the disease in the 1950s and 1960s. Hideo Higashikokubaru announces the total lifting of a state of emergency proclaimed over an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among local livestock at the prefectural hall in Miyazaki City immediately after midnight July 26, 2010. The Miyazaki prefectural government lifted its last remaining ban on transfers of animals, leaving the prefecture free from any restrictions on moving livestock more than three months after the first case of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed in southwestern Japan.
