Robot mimics monkey walking on treadmill

KYOTO, Japan - A 1.55-meter-tall humanoid robot mimics the walk of a monkey on a treadmill (background) in an experiment conducted at a laboratory in Kyoto on Jan. 15. Electrical impulses in the monkey's brain were transmitted to the robot via a high-speed Internet connection from Duke University in North Carolina, directing the robot to mimic the monkey's motion. The experiment, conducted jointly by the Japan Science and Technology Agency and Duke University, demonstrates that human beings may be able to command robotic motion in the future simply by using brain impulses, according to Mitsuo Kawato, a senior member of the Japanese research team.
