High school students urge mayor to preserve tsunami-hit town hall
Kozo Hirano (standing), mayor of Otsuchi town in Iwate Prefecture, greets a group of local high school students on Nov. 17, 2015, in the northeastern Japan town during a discussion over his plan to demolish the former town hall that was destroyed by the 2011 tsunami. The students called for the ruins to be preserved instead so as to serve as a reminder of the disaster's lessons to future generations. Forty people, including the town's mayor at the time, were killed when massive tsunami waves hit the town hall on March 11, 2011. (Kyodo)
