Iwate high school team awarded for decade-long tsunami education outreach

Koichi Iioka (R) and fellow students of Miyako Technical High School in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, northeastern Japan, use their handmade scale model of a local landscape at an elementary school on July 22, 2015, to demonstrate to schoolchildren how tsunami waves reach inland. The students' Tsunami Model Club won the Grand Prix at the 2015 Japan Water Prize for its decade-long outreach program to raise awareness and pass on lessons learnt from past tsunami disasters in the area, including the devastating 2011 tidal wave.
