10 years after Great East Japan Earthquake
Combined photo shows (from R) the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, crippled by the March 2011 earthquake-tsunami disaster. The top photo was taken from a Kyodo News helicopter on March 17, 2011, six days after the earthquake, and the bottom photo taken from a helicopter on Feb. 14, 2021, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, showing tanks storing water contaminated with low-toxicity radioactive tritium used to cool the reactors.
