"Battleship Island" off Nagasaki, candidate for World Heritage site
Hashima Island off Nagasaki, southwestern Japan, known for its underground coal mining during the industrialization of Japan, is commonly called "Battleship Island" because of its shape as seen in this photo taken on April 25, 2015. It is one of the candidate sites for registration on a UNESCO World Heritage list as remnants of Japan's Meiji era (1868-1911) industrial revolution. (Kyodo)
