War-end memorial service on Chichijima depicted in journal

Photo shows part of Toshio Yasugi's picture journal depicting a memorial service for war dead held on Chichijima, the biggest island of the Ogasawara chain in the Pacific Ocean, on Aug. 15, 1945, the day the emperor announced via radio Japan's surrender in World War II. Yasugi was stationed on the island as a member of the Japanese infantry during and shortly after the war. The journal has been kept at the home of Yasugi's daughter Hisae in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, western Japan. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo
