Ainu, indigenous people of Japan
Yuji Yamada, 61, carves figures such as a bear and an owl out of wood to create traditional Ainu artworks in the town of Shiraoi on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Nov. 1, 2015. Yamada said each carving pattern has a meaning and represents gratitude to nature. (Kyodo)
