Japan abandons bid for World Heritage listing of Christian sites
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga attends a press conference in Tokyo on Feb. 9, 2016, after the government decided to withdraw a request to list 14 churches and other Christian sites in southwestern Japan as World Heritage sites as it was urged by a UNESCO panel to review it due to a failure to fully explain their overall value. "It is quite regrettable that our explanations were not accepted." (Kyodo)
