Sakae Menda, Japan's 1st person freed from death row

File photo taken in July 1983 shows Sakae Menda (C) being released from death row after winning acquittal in a retrial at the Kumamoto District Court's Yatsushiro branch. Menda died on Dec. 5, 2020, of natural causes at a home for the elderly in Fukuoka Prefecture at the age of 95.
