              The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

              Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple.                   The south garden of the Namikawa Yasuyuki residence at Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge-agaru is viewed from inside. Mr. Namikawa and a woman with a fan are sitting together on a veranda beside the Japanese kaiyushiki garden designed by Ogawa Jihei. Another woman, possibly a maid, is standing behind the woman, holding a small basket in her left hand. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.                     This photo captures Matsushima Beach as seen from Kyogashima Island. The Kanrantei Teahouse in the Momohama Period (late 16th century) architecture style, a Designated Cultural Asset of Miyagi Prefecture, is visible in the distance, just to the left side of the island. The boat is a chabune with full sail.                       The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.
