The Moji Harbour

Moji is one of the entrance ports to Kyushu, facing the Kanmon channel and Shubo nada. It flourished as an important crossroad for transportation from the olden days, but during the Edo, it was only a lonely village. Development began with the establishment of the Port Building Company in 1889.         View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.               This photo is a panoramic view from Kotohira Shrine at Minamiyamate of the southern tip of the foreign settlement and the Naminohira area. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground.                 This is a three-panel panoramic photograph depicting Ohato, Shinchi, the Oura waterfront, Matsugae Bridge, Minamiyamate, Kozone, Naminohira and Furukawa-machi. Shin-Ohashi, Umegasaki and Matsugae bridges have been built as part of the re-routing of Nakashima River, indicating that the date is around 1887. The left panel captures the entire view of Dejima, Shin-ohashi Bridge, Shinchi and Umegasaki, the centre panel the area from Umegasaki to Minamiyamate, the Russian Consulate and the central part of the foreign settlement, and the right panel the area from the central part of the foreign settlement to Furukawa-machi.                   Shimoda is known as a port opened to foreigners at the end of the Edo era. The Shogunate appointed a Shimoda Bugyo (magistrate) there in 1853, when the US fleet came to Uraga and demanded that ports be opened for trade. The Shogunate ordered them to enter Shimoda Harbour. It was also here that Perry landed in 1854. Shimoda was blessed with the features of a good natural harbor.                     This is a view of Togitsu Village in Nishisonogi County adjacent to Omura Bay and Togitsu Harbour. The heavily populated Urago district is in the foreground, while on the opposite shore is the beach line of Sakino and its houses. This harbour was often used by people travelling to and from Omura. The hilly area in the background includes the villages of Okago and Urerigo. The tall mountain in the background is Mt.
