        Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.           Stirring the paddy field

          A farmer is cultivating the field using black-haired cow at a rice paddie in Uji. A rope and a plow are tied to the back of the cow and each time the cow pulls the plow, the rice paddie is cultivated. A big warehouse is behind and a small shack covered with mats is made temporarily next to it, and a farmer with a balance pole is carrying goods. The rice seedlings may be preserved in the shack.             The Great Bell,Chion-in Temple

            The big bell of Chion-in Temple is seen from the west side of the bell tower. Men and women in kimono are looking at the bell over the iron fence. Also called Yoshimizu's Bell, this is the largest bronze bell in Japan and was cast at Sanjo-Kamanza foundry in 1636. It is 5.4m high, 2.7m in diameter, 29cm thick, and weighs 7.5 tons.               Farmers are busy planting rice in flooded paddies near Kyoto. They are barefoot and wearing short kimonos because of the water. The women have their heads covered with hand towels, and the men wear straw hats to protect themselves from the sun.
