        The cedars along Nikko Highway were donated by Matsudaira Masatsuna on the 33rd anniversary of the death of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.           Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.             It happens once in a while there is a lot of snow from February to March at Hakone. Depending on the altitude the amount of snowfall is evidently different. There is a snowbelt around the altitude of 300m and 500m and below that line, the snow hardly accumulates. Therefore, this must be higher than Ohiradai and definately not Yumoto or Tonosawa.                   This is the old Hakone Highway near Ichinotorii gate at Moto-Hakone, and the cedar trees. The elctric pole is for the telegraph which opened between Tokyo and Nagasaki in 1873. Since the electric line was placed along the Tokaido Highway during the Edo Period, it is visible at Hakone Hachiri in the Old Tokaido Highway. Lake Ashinoko and Hakone Shrine can be seen between the trees.
