    SHINGU, Japan - Japan's largest ''torii,'' a gateway at the entrance to a Shinto shrine, is completed in a ceremony at Kumano-Hongu Shrine in Hongu, Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, on May 11. Some 500 people passed through the 34-meter-high, 42-meter-wide gate after the ceremony.

The five girls in hakama trousers are perhaps praying to pass a school examination. Three bridges span Shinji Pond: Taiko-bashi, Hira-bashi, and Taiko-bashi. They are said to represent the past, present, and future.           The red Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Important Cultural Asset) is recognized around the world as a symbol of Japan. The current gate, the eighth built since the Heian Period, was completed in 1875. It is approximately 16m tall, and the horizontal part, called 'kasagi,' is approximately 24m long. The posts are made from camphor logs.             The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.               The Nikozan Shrine of Chuguji on the north bank of Chuzenji Lake. Along the lake stands huts of religious ascetics. Due to the 1902 avalanche of rocks and earth, the Kannondo in the centre of the photo and huts to the left of the torii were destroyed.                 The view of Chuguji of Futarasan Shrine on the north bank of Chuzenji Lake. Huts for Buddhist trainees stand along the bank.                   Futarasan Shinto Shrine is viewed from the Ojiri River side, on the east side of the lake. The facility, which enshrines the deity Futara-gongen, was built by Shodoshonin in 784.                     The six meter-tall Karagane Torii is in the right foreground. The first bronze torii gate in Japan, it was built by third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The Todaihoya, where hanging lanterns are stored, is visible through the gate. At the top of the stairs stands Yomei Gate, the most famous structure at Nikko Toshogu.
