Children enjoy the cherry blossoms while babysitting. Several hundred plum and cherry trees were planted at Yasukuni Shinto Shrine, and today there are said to be about 1,000 cherry trees there.           Omoto Park on the west side of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine has been known for its beautiful cherry blossoms since the Edo Period. These cherry blossoms were depicted by Nagasawa Rosetsu in The Eight Scenes of Itsukushima (Important Cultural Asset) under the title Omoto Cherry Blossoms.                 Iseyama Kotaijingu Shrine and Naritasan Yokohama Betsuin (a.k.a. Noge Fudo) were built in 1870 near Mt. Noge.                   The English title is Wayside Resting Place. This is probably the endai bench at a teahouse on the Mukojima embankment. The kimono style of the three dressed-up girls indicates that they are geigi (young geisha). The food on the bench appears to be manju sweet buns.                     Until the Murayama and Yamaguchi reservoirs were built in 1927 and 1934, respectively, the Tamagawa Waterway seen in this photograph was the main source of water for Edo and later Tokyo. Huge cherry trees stand along the banks. Only a few old cherry trees remain at present because most of them were cut down in 1954 to allow for the expansion of the Itsukaichi Highway north of the waterway. The spaces where people could put out blankets to sit and enjoy the cherry blossoms also disappeared, and people began to go to Koganei Park for cherry blossom viewing.                       The Kanda Josui (waterway) stretching from around Sekiguchidai in Koishikawa and Iida Bridge was called Edo River (different from the tributary of Tonegawa). It is said that cherry trees were planted here in 1884, but despite its shallow history, the area became a famous cherry blossom viewing site called the new Koganei by the end of Meiji Period. Several boat houses provided lodgings and rented out small boats of this kind. It was a refined pleasure to view the cherry blossoms from the boat.
