A simple shrine dedicated to Benten is shown in the foreground of the five-story pagoda. Behind it is a restaurant. The roof visible to the right of the pagoda is the sutra depository). It was called rindo (round hall) or rinzo (round storehouse) because worshippers rotated it while praying. The bell tower was destroyed in a 1945 air raid, but the bell was fortunately saved. A new bell tower using the same bell was completed on December 18, 1946.         The five-story pagoda is viewed from Toyokuni Shrine (Senjokaku, or One Thousand Mat Hall ) on Tonooka Hill on the east side of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine. Senjokaku Hall was built in 1587 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi for the monthly Buddhist rite of reading of the Senbukyo sutra. The magnificent hall was built in irimoya architectural style with a tiled roof. The main hall, rebuilt by the fourth shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna in 1654, is modeled after the Shishinden.                       The Main Hall of Tomeizan Kofukuji Temple (64 Tera-machi, Nagasaki City), known popularly as Nanking Temple. The temple was founded by the Chinese priest Zhenyuan from Fuliang Prefecture, Jiangxi Province.
