Niomon Gate and the torii,Taiyuin Shrine, Nikko

The great torii gate at the entrance to Nikko Toshogu Shrine is seen with Omotemon in the background. Visitors arrived here from the Omote-sando approach. The torii gate was donated by Kuroda Echizennokami Nagamasa in 1618. Nine metres high, it is the largest stone torii gate built during the Edo Period. The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple. Five-story pagoda at Hokanji Temple

The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide. Kameido Shrine
