Mid to late Meiji Period. The road in the centre led to Nunobuki Falls and thus was called Takimichi (waterfall road). Although not visible in this photograph, the residence of Kawasaki Shozo, founder of present-day Kawasaki Ship Building, Co. Inc, was located nearby. Kawasaki also founded a museum in 1890.       The building on the right is Ogiya Restaurant. A garden is on the left side of Otonashi River. According to the restaurant brochure, the history of the establishment goes back to 1648 when Yazaemon started a simple tea stand on the street. That was the time of the 3rd Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Hayafune Takehiko is currently the 14th generation owner. The modern building is a five-story concrete structure, with Ogiya Restaurant on the second floor. The gates still remain at the first floor entrance.         This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present.             The bank of Katsura River, which separated the feudal domains of Sagami and Kai along the old Koshu Highway (present-day Uenohara-machi in southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture), seen from the east side (Sagami side) of the river. The buildings are teahouses standing along the highway, the existence of which is reported in travel journals as early as the Tenpo Period (1830-44). The mountain station Suwa-no-Sekisho (Kuchidome Bansho) is up the slope on the right. Mt.                 The sanmon (front gate) at Sensoji Temple was called Niomon because statues of the guardian deities Kongo Rikishi were installed on both the right and left (present-day Hozomon). Statues of Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri Bodhisattva) and Shiten (four angels) are installed on the second floor of the gate building. The plaque Sensoji is based on calligraphy by the head priest of the Tendai Sect, Ryosho Hoshin-o.
