Along Oura River

This is the settlement on the right bank of the Oura River around 1897. There’s a long row of large wooden western buildings. Rickshaws awaiting customers are lined up along the street with gas lights by the stone harbour walls. Small cargo vessels called sanpan that carry cargo to and from ships anchored off-shore are moored closely together. The pink western style building on the hill in the back is the Steele Memorial Academy.       This photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon. Another brick building, the lathe workshop with the first iron roof truss in Japan was not destroyed. The western-style building on the hill to the left is the dormitory for foreign staff built in April,1874.         This is a view from Mt. Kazagashira looking over the city centre and harbour. Land reclamation has progressed in the Shinchi area, and new buildings are being erected. But the old stone embankments still remain. Dejima Island and Dejima Bridge are visible along with Shin-Ohashi Bridge (built in 1869) and a white Western-style residence in Tsuki-machi. The date is 1871or 1872.                 This is Oura and Higashiyamate from Minamiyamate. The newly built Confucius Shrine is in the middle. The street with the western-style buildings in the foreground used to be where foreigners used to go out to drink. Three buildings behind Confucius Shrine to the right have been recently restored ‘Seven Western Houses of Higashiyamate.’ The pink western style building in the upper right is Higashiyama Gakuin (the former British Consulate), the white building above it is Kaisei School.                     This is a view of Nagasaki Harbour from the hill area of Minamiyamate. The Russian Orthodox Church was popularly known as the Russian Temple or Nicholas Church and was located in the precincts of the Russian Consulate at No.19 Minamiyamate. The roofing work indicates that the building was still under construction.                       These are the western style buildings with the highest rents, located on the Bund in the foreign settlement. This area was called the Bund after the one in Shanghai. The buildings are from left, Case & Co. at Oura No. 4, and the later American Consulate at No. 5. The big building with colonial style veranda is Oura No. 6 and would later become the British Consulate. The big western-style house with a hip roof and veranda is Alt & Co. at Oura No.7. The steeple of Oura Church can be seen over the roof. The boat suspended at the quay wall was used to go back and forth to ships anchored off shore. The hill in the background is Mt.
