Fuji is blocked at the precipice, wells up from the lava bed, and spills over as hundreds of thin waterfalls into the basin. Otaki (Male) and Metaki (Female) Falls are visible on the right.       Going down the Hozu River

      A yakata boat descending Hozu River is seen from the northern bank. The Kyoto Railway Company tracks and a tunnel are visible on the right. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. The river boats that carried lumber and goods from Tanba Kameoka to Kyoto were converted to leisure boats at the end of the Meiji Period when the Kyoto Railway was established.         This photo captures Matsushima Beach as seen from Kyogashima Island. The Kanrantei Teahouse in the Momohama Period (late 16th century) architecture style, a Designated Cultural Asset of Miyagi Prefecture, is visible in the distance, just to the left side of the island. The boat is a chabune with full sail.           Stereograph of Rikushu-no-matsu (Land Boat Pine) of Rokuonji Temple taken from the west side of the hojo (head priest's quarters), facing west-northwest. It is said that this pine was planted by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. The branches were formed to look like a boat. On the left is the ohjoin (large study), and the roof of the kuri is visible on the right.             The Tamadare Falls

            Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.               A cargo boat on the Nihonbashi River

              View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.                   The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G. Water wells up from the 20 meter-high lava bed which stretches for two hundred meters, and spills over as hundreds of white threads into the basin below.
