      The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.         The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.           A fortune teller plies his trade in the Fushimi Inari Shrine precincts. Books are piled on the table along with a few pens and a bamboo cylinder containing sticks for fortune telling. The fortune teller appears to be writing something. This was taken by the British photographer H. G. Ponting in 1904.             Going down the Hozu River

            A yakata boat descending Hozu River is seen from the northern bank. The Kyoto Railway Company tracks and a tunnel are visible on the right. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. The river boats that carried lumber and goods from Tanba Kameoka to Kyoto were converted to leisure boats at the end of the Meiji Period when the Kyoto Railway was established.               View of the Romon Gate from Taiko-bashi (Drum Bridge) located just through the torii gate at the entrance of the shrine. The five girls in hakama trousers are perhaps praying to pass a school examination. Three bridges span Shinji Pond: Taiko-bashi, Hira-bashi, and Taiko-bashi. They are said to represent the past, present, and future.                     An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.
