Hozugawa Valley looking upstream. The topography suggests that this was taken from the valley at the west entrance of Asahi Tunnel on the former Japan National Railroad San'in Line, facing northwest. Mt. Ushimatsu is visible in the centre. Since no railroad tracks are visible, the photograph was probably taken before the opening of Sagano-Sonobe Line of Kyoto Railway in August 1899.       Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio. The bridge in this photograph was washed away by a flood in 1902.           A yakata boat descending Hozu River is seen from the northern bank. The Kyoto Railway Company tracks and a tunnel are visible on the right. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. The river boats that carried lumber and goods from Tanba Kameoka to Kyoto were converted to leisure boats at the end of the Meiji Period when the Kyoto Railway was established.             Mt. Asama (2568m) as seen from the post town of Kutsukake, one of the three post towns of Asama-Negoshi. The Nakasendo Highway passes the southern foot of the mountain. It was after the opening of the first road built as part of the Seven Route Construction Project of Nagano Prefecture in 1883 that carriage traffic appeared. The stream is Yukawa.               The bank of Katsura River, which separated the feudal domains of Sagami and Kai along the old Koshu Highway (present-day Uenohara-machi in southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture), seen from the east side (Sagami side) of the river. The buildings are teahouses standing along the highway, the existence of which is reported in travel journals as early as the Tenpo Period (1830-44). The mountain station Suwa-no-Sekisho (Kuchidome Bansho) is up the slope on the right. Mt. Shin-Ohashi, Umegasaki and Matsugae bridges have been built as part of the re-routing of Nakashima River, indicating that the date is around 1887. The left panel captures the entire view of Dejima, Shin-ohashi Bridge, Shinchi and Umegasaki, the centre panel the area from Umegasaki to Minamiyamate, the Russian Consulate and the central part of the foreign settlement, and the right panel the area from the central part of the foreign settlement to Furukawa-machi.
